Leitrim clinch promotion after ‘Tipp’-top performance

Leitrim men’s footballers are celebrating promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz Football League following Sunday’s 0-15 to 0-9 victory over Tipperary in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Darragh Rooney scored 0-9 in what was a composed performance by the home side, despite the palpable tension around the ground for much of the afternoon.

That result, coupled with Longford’s 2-18 to 2-9 loss in Wexford, ensured that Andy Moran’s side will take on Laois (also promoted) in next Saturday’s Division 4 league final at Croke Park (5pm).

The main priority for the team was getting promotion.

Leitrim assistant manager Mickey Graham reflected on achieving that goal with Ocean FM Sport’s John Lynch after the game.

Leitrim goalkeeper Nevin O’Donnell told John Lynch that the Connacht championship defeat to New York last April may ultimately have been the making of this current team.
