Two more local golfers qualify for West of Ireland

Rosses Point native David Brady and Enniscrone Golf Club’s Derek Basquill were among the 19 golfers to secure a place in the main Connolly Motor Group West of Ireland Championship draw this Friday, following Wednesday’s qualifier at wet and breezy County Sligo Golf Club in Rosses Point.

Brady, who now lives in Maynooth and plays out of Straffan Golf Club in Co Kildare, carded a two-over par round of 73 to book his place on Friday’s timesheet.

Basquill was one shot further back on +3 after a round of 74 to safely make it through.

97 golfers were trying to secure one of the qualifier spots on offer on Wednesday.

The eventual cut mark was +5, and with the light fading fast on Wednesday evening, nine golfers were involved in a play-off in near darkness to decide the final two places.

At one stage, greenkeepers had set up machinery lighting (pictured) on the Rosses Point course to help the players to see their ball on the fourth play-off hole.

Conal Keenan from Belvoir Park (Belfast) and Edmondstown’s Patrick Curran secured the final two places.

The 2024 Connolly Motor Group tees off on Good Friday morning with two rounds of qualifying strokeplay (Friday and Saturday).

The top 64 players will then contest the matchplay stages from Sunday morning onwards.

Ocean FM’s special hour-long preview of the 2024 Connolly Motor Group West of Ireland Championship will be broadcast live from the Co Sligo Golf Clubhouse on Thursday evening from 8-9pm.
