Defeat for Sligo in contentious finish to AIL playoff

There was a contentious finish to Saturday’s Energia All-Ireland League Division 2 promotion/relegation play-off semi-final in Limerick, as UL Bohemians snatched a dramatic 13-12 win over gallant Sligo with the last kick of the match.

Sligo thought they had won the game after UL Bohs place kicker Harry Byrne missed a conversion with his side trailing by point, 12-11.

The referee blew for full-time, but as Sligo players began to celebrate, the match official consulted with one of the touch-judges.

After apparently being informed that Sligo players hand crossed the end line before the kick was taken, the referee ordered the conversion to be re-taken.

This time, Byrne was accurate and a 12-11 victory became a 13-12 loss for Paddy Pearson’s Sligo.

Listen below to the closing stages of the match, as told by Ray Lannon and Pat Curran. As well as an interview with Sligo RFC Head Coach, Paddy Pearson.

Ocean FM Sport’s Ray Lannon also spoke to UL Bohemians head coach BJ Botha after the semi-final.
