“Fight for cancer services will continue” – Devins
Sligo TD and former Junior Minister Jimmy Devins said that he has paid a heavy price for lobbying within Government for the retention of breast cancer services in Sligo.
Deputy Devins missed out on being reappointed as a Junior Minister and reports suggest that this may have been due to the fact that the Sligo Doctor did not agree with the transfer of breast cancer services from his local hospital.
Mr Devins has been criticised by Cancer campaigners for not being vocal enough on the issue however he maintains that he was fighting for Sligo General within Government.
Breast Cancer Services are due to be stransfered from Sligo to a centre of Excellance in Galway by the begining of summer.
However Dr Devins maintains that the fight is not over and he will continue to use his position to pressurise the Government to change their stance.
