Senators expected to oppose amalgamation of Councils

It’s expected that the Government will face resistance from Senators over proposals outlined in An Bord Snip Nua report to scrap some local authorities.

Last week’s report recommended that all Town Councils be abolished and the number of County Councils reduced from 34 to 22.

There are fears that if implemented, these proposals could see the amalgamation of Leitrim and Sligo County Councils.

According to todays Irish Independent,  Fianna Fail and Green Party Senators, most of whom are elected by councillors, are opposing the recommendations.

They claim that a price should not be put on local democracy.
