Abbott Ireland seeks 41 redundancies

There has been further bad news on the jobs front in Sligo this evening.

It’s been confirmed that the Abbott Ireland plant at Ballytivnan in Sligo are to axe 41 full-time jobs, due to a downturn in demand for its nutritional products.

The company told staff today that they are seeking voluntary redundancies.

The news comes following yesterday’s announcement by the Stiefel Laboratories Company in Sligo that it’s to close its outlet by the year 2013, with the loss of 250 jobs.

The Abbott Ireland plant at Ballytivnan has been in existence since 1974.
It employs around 360 people.

Reacting to the news this evening, Fianna Fail Deputy, Jimmy Devins, said he would now be seeking an urgent meeting the Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in order to stem the tide of local job losses.

He said the Abbott announcement was another significant jobs blow, following yesterdays news of the closure of Stiefel.

Deputy Devins expressed his sympathy for the staff of Abbots and also Stiefel following this weeks jobs blow.   He said these are highly trained and qualified staff, and it was important to ensure that the State agencies assist them to find alternative employment as soon as possible.
