Sligo Chamber concerned by Halifax job losses
The closure of Halifax in Sligo will have a serious impact on the town, according to the Sligo Chamber of Commerce.
President Fergal Burke said the move casts negative sentiments on the town and county.
Bank of Scotland Ireland confirmed yesterday evening that it was closing its retail banking operations in Ireland.
An estimated 10 jobs will be lost in Sligo’s Gratten Street branch of the bankĀ as part of the 750 redundancies made nationwide.
Mr. Burke said serious questions need to be asked about the Government’s handling of the banking crisis.
Meanwhile,
Fine Gael Councillor Tony McLoughlin is calling for co-operation between the various agencies in Sligo to attract more jobs to the region.
In the wake of the latest job blow to the town, he said more needs to be done to secure employment for young people.
