Ireland North West MEP Marian Harkin was last night presented with the 'Outstanding Achievement Award' in the 'MEP 2011 Awards'.
Organised by the Brussels based 'The Parliament Magazine' the award is in recognition of her work in promoting the interests of volunteers and volunteering in the European Union.
The Outstanding Achievement Award is presented to one MEP every year in recognition of excellent work which goes beyond their immediate committee responsibilities.
As a longtime champion of volunteering, MEP Harkin was the driving force behind 2011 being declared the European Year of Volunteering (EYV 2011).
During the course of the year, she travelled to promote the economic and societal benefits of volunteering, and also contributed to a key UN Global Volunteers meeting in New York.
