Call for ban on circus animals in Leitrim

Added: 09-07-2012

An animal rights group say they have issued letters to members of Leitrim County Council urging them to introduce a ban on animal act circuses.

Aran is asking members to put forward a motion that will effectively stop circuses that use animals setting up in the county.

The group claims The Courtney Brothers Circus, which recently visited Carrick-on-Shannon and Drumshanbo, are mistreating the animals they use in their acts.

Spokesperson John Carmondy says there are other local authorities who are due to introduce similar motions in the coming months.

Meanwhile the General Manager of The Courtney Brothers Circus is defending the claims.

Jim Conway says the animal rights regulators in Ireland have visited their circus and it has passed all inspections.
