Calls for extended cemetery opening times

There are calls for the opening times of Sligo's main cemetery to be extended to accommodate those who wish to visit their loved ones graves past 6pm during the winter months.

The issue was raised at last night's meeting of Sligo Borough Council by Fianna Fail Cllr Jude Devins who said he had been contacted on a number of occasions by people who where unable to gain access to the graveyard.

The majority of Councillors supported the move to extend the opening times and Sinn Fein Cllr Sean McManus said he would put forward a motion on the matter at the September meeting of the Council.

Cllr Devins says its unfortunate the majority of people should suffer because of a small number of incidents of anti-social behaviour.
