Tribute to Shane Gilroy
It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the untimely andtragic death of Club player Shane Gilroy on Mon 7th May 2012 at the young ageof twenty five. Shane was a greatclubman and was always eager and available to help out in the Club at playing,coaching and refereeing underage games.He started his football career for the Club at the age of five and won U-9 andU-11 City Board Leagues in the mid 90’s. He was a valuable member of the Clubshistoric U-14 Team which represented Sligo in Feile Peil na nOg in Coolmeen CoClare in 1999. Shane was a very skilful player and was equally at ease witheither foot and he represented the Team in the skills competition at theFeile. He also won the U-14 League andChampionship in 1999 thus completing thetreble at U-14 level which was a historic first for the Club. He was on theU-16 Team that won the U-16 League in 2001. Shane progressed to the Int andJunior Teams and was always first attraining and last to leave. He received the ‘’Clubs Intermediate Player of theYear Award in 2006’’ for his reliability, dependability, his exquisite skill and pace and for getting some great scores from play and from frees.For his humility and honesty and for getting on with life on andoff the field without any fuss’’.
Shane’s was truly one of nature’sgentlemen and his outstanding personal qualities endeared him to his manyfriends who were all shocked and saddened at his sudden death.
The final whistle blew for Shane on Mon 7th May 12 and he has left anindelible mark on all who knew him inhis short stay amongst us. We are all enriched for having known Shane and arethe poorer for his passing. We offer our sincere condolences to Shane’s motherMary and father John , his brothers Keith, Trevor and Jason and sister Aisling and all his relations and friends.They can justly remember him with pride and affection.

INTERMEDIATE: Our Intermediate footballers lost to St Pat’s away onFriday in the league. The Intermediates first championship game is against StPat’s on Friday 25th May at 8pm in Connolly Park, Collooney.
LADIES: The ladies team lost to St Farnan’s away on Sunday. Theladies play Eastern Harps on Sunday at 12pm in Hazelwood.
UNDERAGE HURLING: Training continues for all ages every Wednesday at 6pmon the astroturf pitch.
