Cut in Tidy Towns funding

Added: 12-06-2012

The decision to slash budgets for Tidy Towns groups, and community and voluntary organisations in County Sligo this year has been criticised.

Sligo County Councillors voted yesterday at their meeting to approve a cut of 80 per cent in funding for Tidy Towns groups, and a cut of 66 per cent in funding for community and voluntary organisations.

The Fine Gael and Labour members of the Council all voted in favour of the cuts.

Sinn Fein councillor, Sean McManus, says Fine Gael's vote is all the more unbelievable after party councillor, Hubert Keaney, later tabled a motion calling on the council to work closely with Tidy Towns Committees and voluntary groups.

Fine Gael Sligo Cllr Hubert Keaney says while funding cuts to Tidy Towns and volunatry groups are regretable the financial situation of Sligo County Council needs to be broughtunder control.
