Bundoran Squeeze past Naomh Columba

Delight for Bundoran and heartbreak for the Glen boys as the Seasiders edged a titanic battle in Dunkineely last Saturday morning. One point between the sides out of a total of 57 scored is testament to how close this game was. Playing into a moderate breeze Bundoran were first off the mark but by the tneth minute were already 3-3 to 0-1 behind with Naomh Columba full-forward Pauric O’Neill making the most of superb service from Aaron Doherty to crash home three gaols between the fourth and seventh minutes. While Naomh Columba continued to dominate they were content to take points thereafter but Bundoran never gave up. Cian McEniff and Paul Murphy both struck for goals within a minute towards the end of the half to close the gap to just five points 3-3 to 3-8 but Naomh Columba seemed to up a gear at will with O’Neill putting Dylan Kelly through for a goal and Brian Gallagher following up with a point to leave it 4-9 to 3-2 at the break.
Hope of a Bundoran revival took an early blow when O’Neill, now at centre half-forward ran half the length of the field to crash the ball to the net within thirty seconds. Over the next fifteen minutes honours were more or less even with both sides scoring tit for tat points and Bundoran were still well adrift at 3-7 to 5-12 as the game entered the final quarter. A Bundoran comeback still looked unlikely when McEniff hit Bundoran’s fourth goal to reduce the gap to just eight points with ten minutes remaining. Points quickly followed from Jamie Spollen and McEniff to reduce the gap further and then McEniff hit his side’s fifth goal to put the game back in melting point as the tie entered the last five minutes. While Bundoran had been doing all the scoring Naomh Columba had their fair share of chances but heroic blocks from Conor McLoone and Brian McHenry as well as the Bundoran post denied them goals which might have killed off the Bundoran challenge.
Conor Carr got Glen's first point since the fourteenth minute with four minutes left on the clock to move the gap out to five but the game was thrown wide open again when Paul Murphy carried the ball forward almost 40 m before laying off to Niall Carr who crashed the ball to the net. Bundoran won the next two kick-outs to draw the game level at the end of normal time. Naomh Columba had two chances thereafter to regain the lead with O’Neill skimming the outside of the post and a shot from Ronan Gillespie drifting narrowly wide but Bundoran’s Oran Gallagher made no mistake from 20 m to give Bundoran the lead for the first time since the opening minute. Timmy Govorov had a chance to put the game beyond doubt but lost possession and Naomh Columba moved the ball quickly upfield and while Bundoran twice scrambled the ball clear the Glen boys regained possession each time but when O’Neill’s snap shot drifted wide in the third minute of added time so too did Naomh Columba’s last opportunity to force extra time.

Four Masters Win U14s Semi Final
In Dunkineely last night the first of the weekends under 14s semi-finals took place.
The division 1 contest between Four Masters and Ardara was again a great advert for under age football with nothing between the two sides who both gave it their all. But it was the the Donegal Town men who found that bit extra to win by 4 and book their place in the final.
Thanks to Naomh Ultan for the use of their pitch and facilities on the night.
Naomh Conaill U14s Reach Final
Naomh Conaill Under 14s will play Four Masters in this years under 14s division1 regional final after a very convincing win against Aodh Ruadh last Friday night in Donegal Town.
The southern board would like to thank the Four Masters club for the use of the facilities.
Bundoran U14s Edge Thriller
Arguably last Saturday in Dunkineely saw the underage game of the season so far as Bundoran and Naomh Columba battled it out for a place in this years under 14s division 2 regional final. The Glen men at one point in the game had a 14 point lead and were looking good for the final but Bundoran never gave in and whittled down that lead to eventually win by a single point. This really was a brilliant advert for under age football as both teams should be commended as they gave it their all. Also a word for Martin McShane who refereed this match very well.
Final Score: Bundoran 6-11, Naomh Columba 5-13.
