The fishing industry across the North-West is set to benefit from an agreement to impose sanctions against countries engaged in unsustainable fishing.
The measures have been adopted in response to the massive overfishing of mackerel by Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
The European Parliament has concluded negotiations with the Danish Presidency and a comprehensive agreement is now in place to introduce sanctions against countries engaged in unsustainable fishing practices.
North-West MEP, Pat the Cope Gallagher says he strongly believe the agreed text will deliver both workable and effective trade sanctions, which will act as a real deterrent to countries who engage in unsustainable fishing practices now and in the future.
