The new Chairperson of Sligo County Council, Veronica Cawley, says the year ahead will be challenging as the Council's financial position leaves them with some very difficult decisions to make.
The Independent Labour Cllr was elected by a vote of 14 to 8 with 1 abstention at this afternoon's Annual General Meeting of Sligo County Council.
She will take over the position from Fine Gael Cllr Michael Fleming.
Fianna Fail Cllr Joe Queenan was also put forward for the position but was unsuccessful in his bid.
Fine Gael Cllr Dara Mulvey was elected as Vice-Chairperson by a vote of 13 to 8 after he saw off a challenge from Fianna Fail Cllr Patsy Barry.
Cllr Cawley says it's important to remain positive in these difficult financial times.
