There is concern in Fine Gael in Sligo Leitrim that there is now no Senator for the party in the constituency.
It follows the final Seanad nominations by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny last week.
Boyle-native Frank Feighan was appointed Senator, however, it’s understood at least six potential nominees from the Sligo Leitrim constituency were overlooked including former Senator Michael Comiskey, John McCartin and Gerry Reynolds – all from Leitrim.
The old Sligo north Leitrim constituency had two FG TDs and Senators – now the only Oireachtas member for the party is Tony McLoughlin.
Noel Merrick is the Chairman of the Sligo Leitrim constituency Executive of Fine Gael.
Speaking to Ocean FM News today, he has not denied that he too expressed an interest in a Seanad seat this time round and while he says it’s not surprising perhaps that a Sligo Senator was not appointed it is more surprising that Leitrim was left out:
