A Leitrim TD says he now hopes to meet with the Justice Minister with a view to setting up a Commission of Investigation to deal with allegations of Garda malpractice.
Sinn Fein Deputy Martin Kenny met representatives from the An Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) yesterday following serious allegations of misconduct he made in the Dail last week.
Among the numerous allegations were that members engage active criminals as informants and some use informers to set up or entrap people.
He states the whistleblowers involved in Leitrim include both serving and former members of the force.
In a statement, GSOC says ‘a small number of the cases listed by Deputy Kenny have either already been investigated by GSOC, or are currently under investigation.’
However, Deputy Kenny says yesterday’s meeting revealed that the laws GSOC operates under restrict the progress of their inquiries and a Commission of Investigation is now the obvious way forward:
