Gardai say they are very much aware and are continuing their investigations into the contents of a letter which was found at Sligo IT earlier this month.
The details of the letter are now emerging on social media outlets where a serious and violent threat has been made against students planning to sit an exam in January.
IT Sligo says they have to take the threat seriously and are working closely with Gardai to ensure the protection and security of their students.
Gardaí in Sligo have issued a statement to Ocean FM News stating they are investigating the discovery of the letter which was found in a room at the college on Tuesday 6th December 2016.
The matter was reported to Gardaí by College staff.
The contents of the letter are currently the subject of a Garda investigation.
Investigations are continuing.
An Institute spokesman told Ocean FM News they had no option but to take the threat seriously.
It’s understood the threat was not directed at any particular nationality or group but at other classmates.
An IT statement says the safety and security of its students is paramount, and all appropriate security arrangements are in place.
It adds that the Institute continues to consult with the gardai on a daily basis.
A spokesperson for the students union at the IT was not in a position to comment today but said students are aware of the situation.
