Sligo linked historical items sold above asking price at auction



A number of historical items with links to Sligo went above their estimated prices at the Fonsie Mealy Christmas auction in Dublin yesterday.

Items relating to Sligo’s Noble Six were sold for €3,600, far above the expected price of five to seven hundred euro.

They were a collection of eight pre-printed casualty forms relating to deaths in the Sligo area during the Civil War.

A County Sligo Gaelic League minute book sold for €700, again above the expected price of €225 to €300.

A 1974 letter by the the Donegal playwright, the late Brian Friel, was sold for €900.

In it, he gave his view on the state of Irish theatre.

It was sent from his home near Lifford to the Abbey actor Pat Laffan, a member of the Actors’ Equity council.
