Donegal senator reportedly resigns from Fianna Fail over expenses row

Donegal Fianna Fail Senator Brian O’Domhnaill has reportedly resigned from his party in a row over expenses claims.

It follows a finding by the Standards in Public Office Commission that the senator intentionally contravened ethics legislation when he claimed expenses while serving as a county councillor a decade ago.

The watchdog found against Ó Domhnaill following an inquiry into his claims for travelling and subsistence expenses from two separate bodies for the same dates in 2006.

Mr Ó Domhnaill submitted claims to both Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta.

It is understood he intends to continue in the Seanad as an Independent.

There is no response this morning from Senator O Domhnaill or his office.
