A Sligo Sinn Fein councillor has called for the bridge over the Owenmore River in Ballisodare to be named after a local 16-year old who took part in the 1916 Rising.
Councillor Thomas Healy proposed at a meeting of the county council that the bridge be called the Martin Savage Bridge.
The proposal has now been referred to the council’s placenames committee.
Councillor Healy says the river flows by where Martin Savage is buried.
He told Ocean FM News of the local connections to Ballisodare that make the naming of the bridge appropriate.
