The Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council has led tributes to the late Dermot Gallagher today.
Mr. Gallagher, who was born in Carrick-on-Shannon in county Leitrim was a former Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to the United States, and many other countries.
He is credited with having an influential role in the Northern Ireland peace process.
Councillor Mary Bohan offered the condolences of Leitrim county council and the people of the county.
Fine Gael senator Frank Fieghan also paid tribute to Mr. Gallagher describing him as one of Ireland’s truly great public servants who always retained a deep love for his native Leitrim.
Speaking to Ocean FM Mary Bohan said everyone in the county was very proud of him.
