Concern as reports that Letterkenny chemo referrals suspended

A Donegal TD says cancer patients from Donegal are now being referred to Galway because Letterkenny Hospital is under such pressure.

Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty said today he’s calling for clarification from the HSE after families have informed him that chemotherapy referrals have been suspended at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Letterkenny University Hospital in particular has been under extreme pressure in the last 2 weeks with record numbers on trolleys.

The Saolta Hospital group has had to put the ‘full capacity protocol’ in place a number of times at the hospital in the last month.

Today, Donegal TD Pearse Doherty has issued a statement highlighting reports that new referrals for patients requiring chemotherapy treatments at Letterkenny University Hospital have been suspended, due to what is being claimed as the hospital’s oncology unity having now reached full capacity.

Deputy Doherty says such a move is ‘deeply’ alarming.

It’s understood that no new referrals are being seen in Letterkenny.

He says he has written to hospital managment to seek clarification on this.

Ocean FM News is awaiting a response from the Saolta Hospital Group on the matter.

Today, the crisis in overcrowding at many hospitals continues with over 520 patients on trolleys – 14 of these are waiting at Letterkenny hospital and 5 are waiting in Sligo.
