Donegal boss Rory Gallagher says he is happy to see players lining out for their colleges in the Sigerson Cup this week, despite the national league getting underway on Sunday.
Patrick McBrearty hit eight points for UUJ in yesterday’s 2-15 to 0-13 extra-time defeat of Garda College in Templemore in the competition’s first round, while his Kilcar and Donegal team-mate Ryan McHugh netted a late goal for the Belfast college.
Killybegs’ Eoghan Ban Gallagher was also among the goals for IT Sligo, despite their exit from the competition at the hands of holders UCD in Belfield.
It finished 5-16 to 2-6 in favour of the home side, who now face Martin McHugh’s UUJ in the quarter-finals.
Speaking to Ocean FM yesterday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s league opener at home to Kerry in Letterkenny, Gallagher said he was just hopeful all the players involved came through the games without injury…
Dublin IT, UL, St. Mary’s College, DCU, UCC and IT Carlow are the other sides into the last eight of the Sigerson Cup.
Meanwhile, the officials have been confirmed for all of this weekend’s round one games in the Allianz National Football Leagues.
Maurice Deegan of Laois takes charge of Donegal’s Division One opener at home to Kerry in Letterkenny on Sunday at 2pm.
Sligo’s home Division Three game against Armagh at the same time in Markievicz Park will be refereed by Roscommon’s Patrick Neilan.
And Offaly’s Fergal Smyth takes charge of Leitrim’s trip to Aughrim to face Wicklow in Division Four, also on Sunday
Elsewhere, Fermanagh’s Division Two game away to Down in Newry on Saturday night at 7pm will be refereed by Longford’s Fergal Kelly.
And Niall Cullen from the Erne Gaels club in Fermanagh takes charge of the Division Two game between Derry and Clare in Derry on Sunday.
