Retiring Sligo councillor to attend last meeting today

Tributes will be paid at today’s meeting of Sligo County Council to long-serving Sinn Fein councillor and former mayor of Sligo, Sean MacManus who is retiring from politics.

Today’s council meeting will be the last which Cllr MacManus will attend as a councillor.

It coincides with the 25th anniversary of the death of Cllr MacManus’s son, Joe, who was killed during an IRA ambush of a UDR man near Belleek, Co Dermanagh.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams is among those who have paid tribute to Cllr MacManus.

It’s expected that Sinn Fein will be announcing in the coming weeks who is to be coopted onto the council to fill Cllr MacManus’s seat.

Cllr MacManus’s son, Chris, a former member of Sligo Borough Council, declined to confirm if he would be nominee, when asked by Ocean FM.
