Ratepayers in Sligo are finding out this week what they will have to pay for the year ahead.
And it seems that, generally, those in the county will have to pay slightly more while those in the old Sligo borough area will be paying a little less.
That’s because, in the past, there were different rates payable in the town and county.
But since the abolition of the borough council, there is now only one local authority — the county council — and hence one rate is being introduced under so-called ‘rates harmonisation.’
However, as the cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr Hubert Keaney tells Ocean FM News, ratepayers will be getting details of new valuations of their properties later this year, which will probaly mean rate increases next year:
