Minister Simon Coveney will attend a regional launch in Sligo today of the government’s 20-year plan that aims to strike a balance between urban and rural development.
He will also turn the sod at the Fr O Flanagan Terrace housing development in Sligo.
The ‘Ireland 2040’ plan has already had a national launch in Maynooth University, attended by the Taoiseach and Minister Coveney.
The Cathaoirlach of Sligo County Council, Fine Gael Cllr Hubert Keaney, who will attend this morning’s events, says it’s important that Sligo becomes the growth hub for the North West.
And he says it’s important not to repeat what happened with a plan some years ago where certain cities were designated as ‘gateways’ for growth but with little follow-up:
