A Sinn Fein TD says the thousands of claimants waiting for compensation after the liquidation of Setanta insurance are ‘innocent victims of a bigger battle.’
Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty says the Minister for Finance told him nearly two years ago that the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland would be paying out.
However, the government got legal advice that the Insurance Compensation Fund should pay out, a view that was backed by the Attorney General.
However, the Law Society did not agree with this and took a case to the High Court and the Court of Appeal, which it won.
Deputy Doherty says ‘this farce’ has been rumbling on too long and he now hopes the Supreme Court will soon make its decision on the matter.
In the meantime, however, he is calling on the Insurance Compensation Fund to step in and pay the liquidator so that claimants will get their compensation.
