The draw for the group stages of the Sligo Super Cup threw up a number of intriguing ties as hosts, Sligo/Leitrim, were pooled with top seeds, Glasgow Celtic.
The local youngsters will face the Scottish glamour team on the opening night of the elite under-12 tournament, Friday, April 28th, at the Showgrounds. The other teams in their group are Dublin District Schoolboys League (DDSL) and Linfield FC from Belfast.
It makes for another fascinating tie as Celtic face Linfield, probably the first time the two famous clubs have ever faced each other at any level, at the Showgrounds on Saturday, April 29th.
The second group features Sheffield Wednesday, Club Northern Ireland, North Dublin District League (NDSL) and the Mayo league. The opening game of the tournament on the Friday night features Sheffield Wednesday against NDSL. In all, 16 games will be played over the three day festival of underage football.
Launching the tournament at City Hall on Friday night, Mayor, Clr. Marie Casserly told how the event fitted perfectly with Sligo’s year as the European Capital of Volunteering.
It was also revealed that Pet Stop Sligo will be the main sponsors of the tournament, with Sligo Credit Union, Connacht Gold, Bank of Ireland on board as associate sponsors.
