A Sligo-born nun has become the first woman to be appointed to a top position at an international, non-government organisation based at the United Nations in New York that fights poverty.
Sister Jean Quinn, of the Daughters of Wisdom, will soon take up the role of executive director of Unanima International, which focuses on supporting women, children, migrants and the environment.
Unanima represents 21 female religious congregations across 80 countries.
Sr Jean founded Sophia Housing in 1997, which provides housing in Sligo town and Tubbercurry.
She is also well-known from her time in the Cregg House centre near Sligo for those with intellectual disabilities.
