Fewer new cars being bought



People in the North West are buying fewer new cars.

In the year to the end of April 2017, there were 1,906 bought in Donegal compared to 2,325, the previous year, more than an 18% reduction.

In Leitrim, 382 cars were bought in the year to the end of April 2017 compared to 409 the year before.

And in Sligo, the figures were 708 and 888, a drop of more than 12%.

Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that, nationally, car registrations in the past year are down about 10%, from more than 93,200 to almost 83,800.

There has also been a drop in the sale of light and heavy commercial vehicles.

SIMI Director General Alan Nolan says that while the economy continues to strtengthen, consumers remain cautious.

The five top-selling brands are Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai and Nissan.

The top-selling car for April was the Skoda Octavia and the most popular of the year to date has been grey.
