Homeless people may need help from various support services

A top Sligo County Council official says people who sometimes show up as homeless often require help from a range of support services.

The issue of homelessness has arisen anew after Sligo Independent Councillor Michael Clarke claimed in an interview with Ocean FM yesterday that the numbers needing housing in Sligo could double over the next three years.

Many of those who say they are homeless may not be sleeping on the streets but rely on friends and family for a place to stay.

Speaking about the issue on Ocean FM’s North West Today Show, Sligo County Council Director of Services Bartley Gavin says sometimes people who are homeless are going through a bad time in their lives.

And he says they may need the help of other services to get them through.
