The head of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation is warning there will be a significant impact on jobs in Donegal after the UK announced its to exit the London Fisheries Convention.
The UK attempted to take back control of its waters over the weekend by announcing that it’s to withdraw from the Convention which allows 5 EU countries including Ireland to fish in British waters.
CEO of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation Sean O’Donoghue says those waters account for over 60% of the economic value of all irish landings.
He says they did get committment from the previous Taoiseach Enda Kenny that the impact of Brexit on fishing would be prioritised but he says this needs to be stepped up.
Speaking to Ocean FM Today, he says the impact will be significant unless Ireland’s right’s are protected:
