National Day of Commemoration ceremony takes place in Sligo today

Sligo County Council will host a ceremony in honour of the National Day of Commemoration later today.

The event, which takes place at the Town Hall at 2pm, remembers the Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.

The annual event is hosted on the Sunday nearest to July 11th, the anniversary of the date in 1921 when a truce was signed to end the Irish War of Independence.

Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Fianna Fáil’s Seamus Kilgannon explains what is happening at today’s event.
