The Northern and Western region has been awarded a major entrepreneurial award by the European Union.

Chair of the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, Sligo Councillor Seamus Kilgannon who attended yesterday evening’s award ceremony at the Committee of Regions in Brussels says it will give the area a boost ahead of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

The accolade recognises the strides the North West has taken in recent years in encouraging the creation of jobs in the area.

It also acknowledges the way in which the region has come through recent difficult times.

Speaking to Ocean FM News from Brussels, Councillor Kilgannon said the award is a vote of confidence for the area ahead of the uncertainty of Brexit.

The region includes the eight counties in the North West including Sligo, Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway.

John Reilly, the Head of the Sligo Local Enterprise Office and all of the LEOs have been involved in this initiative and says it will place further focus the West of Ireland as a place to do business.

Mr. Reilly also attended the ceremony held at the Committee of Regions in Brussels yesterday.

He says the award will be marked with a series of keynote events and initiatives throughout 2018.

These events will build on existing and new job creation projects and innovation across the Northern and Western region.

Speaking from Brussels, Mr Reilly said this was the latest in a long line of awards which further enhances the region’s ability to attract and create business.
