Calls for Leitrim to have its own rural resettlement scheme



A Leitrim councillor wants the county to have its version of the national Rural Resettlement Scheme.

The call comes as concern mounts in many areas of the county about dwindling population and loss of services, particularly in rural areas.

Sinn Fein Councillor Padraig Fallon told yesterday afternoon’s Manorhamilton Municipal District meeting of the council that if young people continue to leave areas at the present rate, the county would be in dire straits.

Fianna Fail Councillor Mary Bohan says the council needs more resources and she suggested it write to the new Minister for Rural Affairs, Michael Ring.

However, councillors were told the proposal would require a change in regulations and government policy.

But Fine Gael Councillor Frank Dolan and Fianna Fail Councillor Justin Warnock says the biggest problem in the county is that jobs are not being created.
