A three-week commemoration of a Sligo-born journalist who emigrated to Canada in 1915 will start in his native place this bank holiday Monday.
It will involve events remembering Calry man Michael Hargadon, who died in 1968.
Michael Hargadon was born in Colgagh, Calry in 1888.
In Canada, he became a celebrated journalist, athlete, author and poet.
Now, a programme of commemorative events has been organised in Sligo and the Calry area, starting this bank holiday Monday, and running until the 26th August.
It will include an exhibition at Sligo City Hall, poetry readingds at Hargadon’s Pub in Sligo town, a public lecture, a Hargadon clan gathering, unveiling of a plaque at his birthplace, a boat trip on Lough Gill and various social events.
A road will also be named after Hargadon; it’s at the Dromahair and Calry roads, an area the man himself would have travelled through on his way between his home in Calry and Sligo town.
Full details of events during the three weeks can be found on the Michael A Hargadon web site.
