Sligo Councillors have approved a motion to call for a change to the criteria that An Post is using to keep post offices open in rural areas.
The latest announcement by An Post will see 159 post offices closed around the country as part of a voluntary redundancy scheme.
An Post says no ‘settlement’ with a population of less than 500 will be left without a post office but the criteria defining a settlement is too restrictive, according to Sinn Fein.
At a special meeting in Sligo yesterday, Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy got support to ask the Review Body to change this definition or he says more rural post offices will be closed in even bigger towns:
