A Sligo councillor is calling for it to be made easier and quicker for people to become teachers.
Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Kilgannon said this would help deal with the current shortage of teachers, particularly in subjects such as maths, Irish and European languages.
He proposed this week that Sligo County Council call on Education Minister and Donegal TD Joe McHugh to replace the two-year Masters of Education degree with a one-year Higher Diploma in Education.
Cllr Kilgannon says this would reduce the cost for young teachers as well as producing teachers more quickly for second level.
