Call for ‘small holdings grant’ to be part of CAP reform

A Sligo/Leitrim TD is calling for a food regulator or ombudsman to ensure beef farmers get a fair margin on prices they get for their produce.

During a debate in the Dail yesterday, Deputy Marc MacSharry also called for a small holdings viability grant to be provided under reform of the Common Agricultural Policy.

He says action needs to be taken now to support farmers, particularly because of the impact Brexit will have on the suckler-rearing region of the north west.

He was speaking on a Fianna Fáil motion proposing 14 policy actions to highlight the urgent action needed to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers’ in the beef sector.

Deputy MacSharry also appealed to the IFA to listen to what the new Beef Plan Movement has to say.
