For the first time, Co. Donegal is to have it’s commercial rates reevaluated.
Donegal Fianna Fail TD and Leas Cheann Comhairle, Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher, raised the issue with Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy in the Dail this week.
It’s now been confirmed that the county will begin the valuation process in November with it expected to be published around September 2021 and to come into effect from 2022.
Deputy Gallagher claims that counties that have already carried out this process, have seen large reductions in the tax.
Under the current system, businesses pay a fee based on the value of the premises rather than the actual revenue generated.
Fianna Fail Donegal Councillor, Mícháel Naughton has been vocal on the issue for a number of years and tells OceanFM News that it is a ‘huge burden’ on businesses.
