Sligo to be without Niall Murphy in 2020

It looks like Sligo senior gaelic footballers will have to plan without their team captain Niall Murphy for the 2020 season.

The Coolera/Strandhill clubman hasn’t been training with Sligo over the winter period, and the indications are that he plans to go travelling in the Spring.

Murphy won’t be involved Sligo’s Connacht FBD quarter-final against Roscommon this Sunday (Jan 5th) in Markievicz Park and won’t feature in league or championship this year for the Yeats County.

He explained his decision to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan:

He helped his club Coolera/Strandhill reached the Belfry Sligo senior football championship final in 2019 – and scored 0-16 in a championship win against Coolaney/Mullinabreena last August.

Sligo lost all 10 of their competitive intercounty matches in 2019 and will be operating from Division 4 this season. The team’s opening league match is away to London at McGoveran Park in Ruislip on Sunday, January 26th.

Sligo’s Connacht FBD quarter-final will be live on Ocean FM Sport this Sunday afternooon from 2pm with match commentary from Cathal Mullaney and Colm McGee. Listen live here:
