Sligo Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan has confirmed that he is putting his name forward to be the next Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Eireann.
Feighan was first elected to the Seanad in 2002 and has served two terms in the upper house.
He also successfully contested three general elections campaigns in two different constituencies.
The Sligo based TD is likely to face opposition from a number of other candidates including the Social Democrats join Leader Catherine Murphy.
There is also speculation linking Fianna Fáil’s Seán Ó Feargháil, Fine Gael TD Heather Humphreys and independent Roscommon TD Denis Naughten to the position.
Nominations for the role of Ceann Comhairle must be submitted to the Clerk of the Dáil’s office by 6pm this evening.
Frank Feighan confirmed his interest in the position to OceanFM news.
