Local farm official calls for non EU beef to be banned

A leading North West farming official has called on all elected representatives to protect the agricultural industry in Ireland by suspending all non-EU beef imports with immediate effect.

The calls have been made by Patrick Rooney, the National Interim Chairman of the Beef plan movement.

Rooney who engages in beef farming in his native Leitrim and in Donegal, says such a move would help to generate sales for Irish Beef producers that have witnessed their sales drop significantly in recent weeks.

The North West based farmer has also raised concerns over importing beef from Poland due recent outbreaks of African swine fever and how beef from overseas has been packaged as Irish beef.
