A Sligo councillor is proposing an innovative way to control the speed of traffic.
The system is already widely used in Portugal, Spain, Holland and Sweden and is being trialled at present in Swindon in England.
The Velocity Control System operates on the basis of traffic lights turning red if vehicles approach at speed; they remain green if the vehicle has been travelling within the limit.
Fianna Fail Councillor Donal Gilroy says the system would improve driver behaviour and could be used at many locations throughout the country.
