A former Sligo county councillor says people affected by the closure of bank branches in Ballymote and Tubbercurry should consider using their local credit union.
Bank of Ireland says its services will be provided through nearby post offices but Keith Henry says the credit union helped fill the void when Ulster Bank closed in Ballymote three years ago and will now do so again as the Bank of Ireland closes its branches.
Mr Henry, now a secondary school teacher, is a director of Ballymote Credit Union and previously worked for Bank of Ireland.
He hopes the government will give credit unions the power to provide more banking services.
