A Sligo Leitrim TD is the latest local politician to issue calls on the Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan not to grant a Prospecting licence for gold in North Leitrim.
Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry says the issuing of a licence for such a practice defies logic.
He says that despite a housing crisis locally families are prohibited from getting planning permission for a modest family home in rural Leitrim but yet Green Party’s Environment Minister Eamon Ryan is preparing to grant prospecting licences to Flintridge Resources Limited for gold.
Deputy MacSharry says it’s disappointing that the community in Leitrim has to face this battle in light of recent challenges to have fracking banned in the county
The Sligo TD says the prospect of allowing gold mining to take place will threaten air and ground water quality which will spread far beyond North Co Leitrim.
