Fears public access will be revoked at Cairns Hill

A local TD fears public access will no longer be allowed at Cairns Hill in Sligo.

The Office of Public Works had their bid to purchase 23.5 acres on the site where, as the name suggests, contains two cairns which have historically been used as markers for burial grounds.

Sligo/Leitrim Independent Deputy, Marian Harkin is fearful that public access could be withdrawn as it is now believed to be in the hands of a private individual.

She says she was assured earlier this year that the site would be purchased by the OPW and questions why they didn’t increase their bid.

Tanaiste, Leo Varadkar said he wasn’t familiar with the specifics but would bring Deputy Harkins forward.
