The recent decision taken by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Transport, Eamon Ryan, to issue prospecting licences to mining company Flintridge Resources for 47 townlands in north Leitrim will be debated at today’s monthly meeting of the Sligo and Leitrim County Council.
The licences cover base metals and ores of gold and silver.
The decision has been met with strong opposition locally.
In Leitrim all six Councillors from the Manorhamilton Municipal District have table a motion on the issue which will be discussed in today’s meeting which will take place in Carrigallen.
Minister Ryan’s decision to grant the prospecting licence will be also be discussed at today’s meeting of Sligo County Council. Sligo Drumcliff Councillor Thomas Healy has raised concerns how the move could impact Sligo.
