Sligo lose to Mayo in challenge game



Sligo senior gaelic footballers were well beaten by Kevin McStay’s Mayo in their first football outing of 2023 on Monday.

Mayo won the challenge game in Ballina on a final scoreline of 1-20 to 1-9.

The match was a fundraiser for Mindspace Mayo, which offers free & confidential mental health support for young people aged 12-25.

The game marked a first start for Dublin-born Cormac Howley. a son of former St Farnan’s and Sligo footballer Padraig Howley. who lined out at corner forward on Monday.

Former St Attracta’s playet Paul Towey was again on Mayo starting 15.

Mayo dominated of the encounter establishing a 1-9 to 0-3 interval lead.

Sligo substitute Donal Conlon found the Mayo net on 40 minutes but Mayo always looked comfortable.

Tony McEntee’s side now prepare for their Connacht FBD semi-final against Roscommon on Friday, January 13th, in the NUI Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome.
